About Dr. Shannon Lockhart
Evidence-based specialist care for hormonal, cardiometabolic, and perioperative health.
MD, FRCPC (Anesthesiology) · Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP)
Background. I am a specialist physician certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Anesthesiology, an Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) Certified Practitioner, and a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP). My anesthesiology training has given me a strong foundation in physiology, pharmacology, and multi-system disease, and the clinical ability to distinguish acute illness from the chronic patterns that often underlie it.
Focus. Mid-career, I recognized how routinely the physiology of midlife, perimenopause among it, is missed or misattributed, even for patients with medical training and access. That gap expanded my practice toward hormonal and metabolic health, and toward the group medical visit as a model that enables more time and access to specialist knowledge and expertise to promote informed decisions in a way one-on-one cannot provide. I have since extended the model to perioperative medicine and to common multi-system conditions that brief appointments are not well matched for. The approach is the same in each: start with the physiology and pathophysiology, take the time to explain it clearly and comprehensively, and optimize based on evidence-based management and shared decision-making.
Approach to care
Evidence-based and mechanism-first — recommendations grounded in current research and explained clearly enough to understand symptoms and treatments.
Systems-based — hormonal, metabolic, gastrointestinal, and lifestyle contributors considered together.
Neurodiversity-informed — care designed to be accessible across different sensitivities and strengths.
Collaborative — consultative care that complements primary care, with clear documentation to your team.
Accessible — MSP-covered group medical visits keep specialist-level care within reach across BC.
